History of Tamil Radio Stations in Toronto
In October 1982 on station CHWO the first Tamil broadcast in Toronto aired for 30 minutes. The announcer who did the shows and ran the programs was Mr.Mailvaganam Sarvanantha, an announcer from the Sri Lankan Broadcasting Corporation. He ran the Tamil broadcasts while he was in Canada. In 1986, the Toronto World Tamil Movement,under the name of Tamilcholai, took over this Tamil broadcasting and aired for 60 minutes on every Sunday.

Canadian Thamilosai Radio Inc. was founded by Mr. S.Sreekantha in 1993.The company founder and Canadian Tamil broadcaster S.Sreekantha is a great individual shows Leadership. He is a dedicated volunteer.Mr.Sreekantha was one of the team members of Canadian Tamil Broadcasting Corporation and Canadian Tamil Radio, Toronto and has more than fifteen years of experience in broadcasting. He founded Thamilosai to serve the Canadian Tamil community and to bring the news and events that is going around the world. He has worked endless hours in community involvement. He set up this radio station to tell people news in Tamil for the people who don’t know English or any other languages. Thamilosai Radio broadcasts on frequency AM1430 Mon to Fri from Midnight to 5:00am, Saturdays from Midnight to 8:00am and Sundays Midnight to 6:00am. The covering area starts in the Ontario Place and it extends to Barrie, the GTA, Niagara Falls and Oshawa, approximately for 200 Kilometers radius. There are 30 to 40 thousand listeners residing in the area and the number of Thamilosai listeners has been increasing tremendously because of its unique way of programming. This radio station is one of the leading information broadcasters in the Tamil community. Thamilosai broadcasts local citizens groups and service organizations messages. The programs on Thamilosai are suitable for elders and the younger ones. It is very helpful for the midnight-shift workers of the Tamil community by providing current local news as well as foreign updates from Sri Lanka and India. It also brings news from the Tamil communities all over the world. Thamilosai broadcasts daily to Canadian Tamil, offering global news, in-depth coverage of events in Sri Lanka and Tamil Nadu.
